Endpoint Security for SMEs - Why?
SMEs form the backbone of the German economy. It is the engine for innovation and jobs. However, small and medium-sized companies in particular face major challenges when it comes to information security. Cybercrime is constantly on the rise and dangers lurk around every corner - blackmail, industrial espionage and national interests. Decision-makers in companies consider cyber threats to be the biggest threat - even before the energy crisis or supply chain problems.
It is therefore of the utmost importance for companies to protect their end devices effectively. This applies regardless of their size. A powerful and suitable endpoint security system is indispensable in this context.
Companies with high digitalization pressure are particularly under attack. In 2020, 43% of companies that spent more than 10,000 euros on digitalization were attacked. For companies without such projects, the figure was only 23%. However, the conclusion should not be that these projects should be scaled back. The economy must be able to keep pace with modern developments and we need more digitalization rather than less.
What is endpoint security?

But what exactly is endpoint security? Endpoint Security refers to the security of all end devices used in a company. These include laptops, tablets, smartphones and even workplace computers. All end devices are potential targets for cyber attacks. They therefore represent an incredible number of weak points in a company's security strategy. Endpoint Security helps to identify and close these weak points. In this way, you can prevent unauthorized access and theft of your sensitive data.
Medium-sized companies in particular are often more susceptible to attacks due to limited resources in the IT department. There is often a lack of an IT department, cybersecurity professionals or a sufficient budget for comprehensive security solutions. End devices are often not adequately protected and there is a lack of clear guidelines and processes for security or dealing with security incidents. This leads to a high risk of data loss or a data breach.

Why SMEs are so attractive to hackers
Most attacks are not directed at the seemingly more worthwhile large targets such as corporations. The danger for SMEs is often misjudged by many decision-makers in companies. But only for themselves, as the following chart shows. Decision-makers assess the general risk as very high, but not for their own company. It's like saying „fires only break out in other companies“.
So no matter how high you think your risk is: It's better to multiply it by three.
1. SMEs are easier targets
Effective endpoint security is particularly relevant for SMEs. This is because they do not have the same resources as large corporations, but are just as vulnerable to cyber attacks. In fact, small and medium-sized enterprises are often the preferred target of hackers, as they often expect less robust security measures. For criminals, SMEs are often small quick wins.
2. SMEs are often gateways for others
As SMEs are often also suppliers or closely networked with other companies, they are potential gateways for cyber attacks on other networks. A successful attack on a supplier can not only cause financial damage, but also have a lasting impact on the reputation of other companies. For example, if internal information is published or delivery problems occur.
3. SMEs have worthwhile data
Instead of attacking corporations directly or using SMEs as a gateway, SMEs often offer the same tempting data for less effort. They often have valuable customer data or even entire component data or other important internal information. A data leak can therefore cause immense damage and permanently shake customers' trust in you.
It pays to stay involved
To ensure effective protection of end devices, it is important to stay up to date at all times. After all, criminals are constantly developing new methods of attack. Companies would therefore have to regularly check and adapt their systems. But with a good endpoint security solution with central control, you can minimize this effort. In the end, this is cheaper and more secure than constantly working manually with cyber experts and, above all, more secure than just „updating“ every few months, for example. A good solution is always automatically up to date and enables a quick response without having to call for help first.
Especially in our increasingly digitalized world with a myriad of devices from PCs to smartphones, this is of central importance for companies of all sizes.
Endpoint Security offers you the opportunity to protect yourself effectively against attacks and minimize the damage. They include firewalls, antivirus programs, encryption tools and monitoring mechanisms. The decisive factor is an approach that encompasses both technical and organizational measures. This also includes regular training and sensitization of employees. In this way, human error can also be minimized.
